You can get to know the most traditional district of Aveiro, the Bairro da Beira Mar, the area where marnotos (salinas workers) and fishermen formerly lived, by foot or by Buga (Aveiro's Free Use Bicycle). The one-story Casa de Beira-Mar building, characterized by a facade with only one door and one window, used to be whitewashed in white and yellow. With the development of the local tile production, the facades began to be covered with tile, giving a very unique turn-up to the neighborhood. The Praça do Peixe, Fish Square, as it is commonly known, is worth a visit. It is a characteristic building of the iron architecture from the early twentieth century, that still retains its functionality. Here you will find all the hustle and bustle of this picturesque activity. The surrounding area, sprinkled with restaurants and bars and providing lively nights, became the city's fun area.
